Slots Glossary: RTP, Volatility, Paylines, Bonuses and Jackpot Terms

Plain-English definitions for slot terms, with practical caveats about randomness, RTP versions, volatility, bonuses, jackpots, availability and responsible gambling.

Educational, legal, tax and RG scope

Educational scope: This glossary explains terminology. It does not predict slot outcomes or recommend gambling as a way to make money.

Market scope: Real-money availability depends on state, operator and market type. Do not deposit or play where online gambling is not permitted.

Tax note: Gambling winnings may be taxable. Reporting thresholds and forms can change; verify current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional.

Responsible gambling: Slots are random gambling products. For confidential help, call or text 1-800-MY-RESET.

How to use this glossary

Use these definitions to understand slot rules, paytables, bonus terms and risk language. For real-money play, always verify the current operator terms, game information panel, local availability and responsible gambling limits.

Math and risk terms

RTP - Return to Player

RTP is a theoretical long-run return percentage across a very large sample.

It does not predict a session. Check the exact RTP version at the operator.

Read the RTP guide

House edge

The mathematical advantage built into a gambling product over the long run.

Knowing the house edge does not make short-term outcomes predictable.

Volatility

How uneven a game's results can feel.

High volatility can mean longer losing stretches and should not be treated as better odds.

Read the volatility guide

Variance

A related term for how widely outcomes can differ from the average.

Variance can make short sessions look very different from theoretical RTP.

Hit frequency

How often any win may appear.

A counted win can be smaller than the amount bet.

RNG - Random Number Generator

Software used to generate random game outcomes.

RNG language alone does not prove licensing, audit status or legal availability.

Max win

An advertised maximum outcome for a specific game version.

It is not a likelihood, target or reason to extend play.

Game version

The exact release or configuration of a slot at an operator.

Version differences can affect RTP, rules, features and availability.

RTP version

A specific RTP configuration for a game.

Some providers offer multiple RTP versions, so verify the version in the game panel.

Slot mechanics

Payline

A line or pattern used to evaluate symbol combinations.

Payline rules vary by game and should be checked in the paytable.

Ways to win

A mechanic where many symbol positions can form qualifying combinations.

More ways does not mean better odds unless supported by the exact game math.

Reel

A vertical column of symbols in a slot interface.

Row

A horizontal line of symbol positions.

Symbol

A visual item used in a slot's paytable or feature rules.

Wild

A symbol that can substitute for other symbols under the game's rules.

Wild behavior is game-specific.

Scatter

A symbol that may trigger features outside normal payline rules.

Check the paytable for exact trigger rules.

Bonus symbol

A symbol connected to a feature or bonus round.

A bonus symbol does not imply a predictable trigger rate.

Free spins

Feature spins awarded by a game or promotion.

Promotional free spins can have wagering, expiry, market and withdrawal restrictions.

Multiplier

A feature that multiplies a qualifying outcome under the game's rules.

A multiplier does not make an outcome predictable.

Expanding wild

A wild symbol that expands to cover additional positions.

Sticky wild

A wild that remains in place for a defined feature period.

Cascading reels

A mechanic where symbols disappear and new symbols fall into place after a qualifying event.

Cluster pays

A mechanic where adjacent groups of matching symbols can qualify instead of paylines.

Megaways

A variable-reel mechanic where the number of possible symbol positions can change.

The branded mechanic does not guarantee a better outcome.

Controls and game information

Bet size

The amount staked on one spin or round.

Higher bet size increases financial exposure.

Coin value

A setting used by some slots to calculate total stake.

Max bet

The highest stake the game interface allows.

Max bet is not a recommendation.

Autoplay

A feature that can run multiple rounds automatically where allowed.

Autoplay can increase pace and reduce awareness of spending.

Quick spin

A setting that speeds up animations.

Faster pace can increase loss exposure.

Paytable

The rules page showing symbols, features and qualifying combinations.

Game information panel

The operator or game panel where rules, RTP and version notes may appear.

If key information is missing, treat claims as unverified.

Demo mode

Play using virtual credits instead of withdrawable funds.

Demo play can teach interface, but it does not predict real-money outcomes.

Bonus and wagering terms

Wagering requirement

The amount that must be staked before bonus funds or bonus-derived winnings may become withdrawable.

Check whether it applies to bonus only or deposit plus bonus.

Playthrough

Another name for wagering requirement.

Game contribution

The percentage of a stake that counts toward wagering.

Slots do not always contribute 100%; check current terms.

Max cashout

A withdrawal cap tied to a bonus or promotion.

Max bet rule

The maximum stake allowed while using bonus funds.

Breaking this rule can void bonus funds or bonus-derived winnings.

Bonus expiry

The deadline for using or wagering a bonus.

KYC

Identity verification required by operators before account use, deposits or withdrawals.

KYC can affect withdrawal timing and bonus eligibility.

Restricted markets

Countries, states or regions where a casino, bonus or game is not available.

Bonus Buy / Feature Buy

A feature that lets a player pay to enter a bonus feature directly.

Feature buys can increase loss speed and should not be used to chase outcomes.

Jackpot terms

Progressive jackpot

A jackpot that can grow as qualifying wagers are made.

Progressive jackpots are rare outcomes and should not be treated as session targets.

Fixed jackpot

A jackpot with a stated amount or fixed structure.

Local jackpot

A jackpot connected to one casino, network or limited game pool.

Jackpot contribution

A portion of a qualifying wager that may feed a progressive prize pool.

Rules and contribution rates are game-specific.

Provider identity does not prove legal availability at a specific operator.

Operator

The casino or platform that offers the game to users.

Licensed operator

An operator licensed by a named regulator for a specific market.

Verify the license, jurisdiction and current status from primary sources.

Offshore operator

An operator based outside the user's state or country regulatory framework.

Social casino

A play-for-fun casino-style product that may use virtual currency.

Social casino access is not proof of real-money gambling legality.

Sweepstakes casino

A casino-style product using sweepstakes rules and alternative currencies.

Rules, eligibility and redemption terms are operator-specific.

Geolocation

Technology used to verify where a user is located.

Location checks do not replace legal eligibility checks.

Responsible gambling terms

Entertainment budget

A fixed amount set aside for gambling entertainment.

Budgeting can limit exposure, but it is not a winning system.

Stop loss

A pre-set session loss point where play stops.

Session stop point

A planned point to stop based on time, budget, fatigue, frustration or pressure.

Cooling-off

A temporary break tool offered by some operators.

Self-exclusion

A stronger tool that blocks gambling access for a defined period.

Near miss

A visual result that looks close to a desired outcome.

Near misses do not mean a game is close to paying.

Loss chasing

Continuing or increasing play to recover losses.

Loss chasing is a warning sign to stop and seek support if needed.
