Roulette FAQ: Rules, Odds, Bets, Variants and Risk Questions

Clear answers to common roulette questions. Roulette is a random casino game with a built-in house edge. No betting system, practice result or previous spin can predict the next outcome.

Quick answer

The clearest way to understand roulette is to separate rules, odds and risk. European roulette has a lower house edge than American roulette, but all standard roulette remains negative expected value. Betting systems change stake patterns, not spin probability.

Rules questions

What is roulette?

Roulette is a casino game where players bet on where a ball will land on a numbered wheel. The rules are simple, but the game still has a built-in house edge. Read the roulette rules guide.

What happens on a roulette spin?

The dealer or software closes betting, the wheel outcome is determined, losing bets are cleared and winning bets are paid according to the table. Previous spins do not control the next result.

What does the zero do in roulette?

The zero pocket is the main source of the house edge. On most standard tables, zero makes outside bets such as red/black and odd/even lose unless a special French rule applies.

What is the difference between European and American roulette?

European roulette has one zero. American roulette has 0 and 00, which increases the house edge. Compare the variants.

What is French roulette?

French roulette usually uses a single-zero wheel and may include La Partage or En Prison rules for even-money bets. These rules can reduce the house edge on those bets, but do not make roulette profitable. Read the French roulette guide.

What are inside bets?

Inside bets are placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers inside the main layout. They pay more when they hit, but they hit less often than outside bets.

What are outside bets?

Outside bets cover larger groups such as red/black, odd/even, high/low, dozens and columns. They usually hit more often than inside bets, but the payout is lower.

Odds and payout questions

Which roulette bet has the highest standard hit probability?

Even-money bets such as red/black have the highest standard hit probability on a European wheel: 18/37. They still have a house edge because zero is a losing outcome.

Are even-money bets safer?

No roulette bet should be called safe. Even-money bets are simpler and hit more often than inside bets, but they do not remove the house edge. Compare roulette bets by probability.

How are roulette payouts calculated?

Payouts are lower than true odds because of the zero pocket. A straight-up bet pays 35:1 even though the European probability is 1 in 37. See the payout chart.

Does a higher payout mean a better bet?

No. Higher payout usually means lower hit probability. On a standard European wheel, common bets share the same house edge even though they feel different.

What is house edge?

House edge is the casino's long-run mathematical advantage. It does not predict a single session, but it explains why roulette is negative expected value over time.

What is RTP in roulette?

RTP is return to player over the long run. A 2.70% house edge corresponds to a theoretical 97.30% RTP, before considering rules, variants or operator-specific terms.

Can combining roulette bets improve expected value?

No. Combining bets changes coverage and volatility. It does not remove the house edge or make the next spin more predictable.

Why does the American top-line bet get warned about?

The American 0-00-1-2-3 bet usually pays 6:1 and has a higher house edge than other standard American roulette bets. It should be understood as a higher-edge bet, not a shortcut.

Variant questions

Which roulette variant has the lower house edge?

French roulette with La Partage can have the lowest house edge on even-money bets when that rule applies. European roulette is usually lower edge than American roulette.

What is La Partage?

La Partage is a French roulette rule where half of an even-money bet is returned if the ball lands on zero. It only applies when the table explicitly offers it.

What is En Prison?

En Prison is a French roulette rule that can leave an even-money bet pending after zero. The exact resolution depends on the table rules, so check the rules before play.

Are multiplier roulette games the same as standard roulette?

No. Multiplier variants can change payouts, volatility and sometimes the house edge. Compare them using official rules, not just the wheel layout.

Is mini roulette the same as European roulette?

No. Mini roulette uses fewer numbers and has its own payout structure. Do not assume the same house edge or payout rules as a standard wheel.

Betting-system questions

Can betting systems beat roulette?

No. Martingale, Fibonacci, D'Alembert and Labouchere change stake sizes. They do not change the probability of the next spin or remove the house edge.

Is Martingale safe?

No staking system should be called safe. Martingale can escalate stakes quickly after losses and can collide with table limits and bankroll limits. Read the Martingale risk guide.

Is Fibonacci safer than Martingale?

Fibonacci usually grows more slowly than Martingale, but it still does not change the odds. A slower progression can still create large losses over a long losing run.

What does D'Alembert change?

D'Alembert changes how stakes move after wins and losses. It does not change wheel probability, payout math or expected value.

Why is Labouchere risky?

Labouchere can make a loss sequence expand as play continues. Target-based framing can make it harder to stop after losses.

Can practice mode prove a system works?

No. Practice mode can show how stakes grow and how variance feels, but it cannot prove a betting system or predict real-money outcomes.

Does a hot number mean it is likely to hit again?

No. Short-term clusters can happen randomly. A recent streak is not evidence that the next spin is more likely to land on the same number.

Wheel bias and advantage-play questions

What is wheel bias?

Wheel bias is a historical roulette concept involving rare physical-wheel defects. It is not a practical method for ordinary online players, does not apply to RNG roulette, and device-assisted tracking can create legal or account risks.

What is dealer signature?

Dealer signature is a historical advantage-play idea based on alleged repeatable dealer behavior. Modern live dealer games are monitored, operator-controlled and governed by terms. Do not treat it as a reliable or recommended method.

What is visual ballistics?

Visual ballistics is a historical idea based on observing wheel and ball motion. It is not a casual online method and should not be used as a basis for real-money play.

Can I use an app to track roulette outcomes?

Do not use devices, apps or hidden tools to analyze or project casino outcomes. Laws and operator terms vary, and device-assisted play can create serious account or legal risk.

Live dealer, RNG and mobile questions

Is live dealer roulette fair?

A reputable live dealer table should disclose provider, rules, table limits and licensing information. Do not assume every live table is equivalent. Read the live dealer guide.

Is RNG roulette different from live dealer roulette?

Yes. RNG roulette uses software-generated outcomes, while live dealer roulette streams a physical wheel. Both still require rule, provider and operator checks.

Can I play roulette on mobile?

Some operators offer mobile roulette through browsers or apps, but availability depends on location, licensing, age checks, geolocation and operator terms. Read the mobile roulette guide.

Can stream delay affect live dealer roulette?

Stream delay can affect timing, bet confirmation and user experience. It should not be treated as an advantage or as a signal for the next result.

Is practice roulette the same as real-money roulette?

No. Practice can teach layout and payout examples, but real-money roulette adds legal availability, KYC, table rules, operator terms and behavioral risk.

Do mobile roulette apps work everywhere?

No. App availability depends on licensing, store rules, geolocation and age checks. Do not use VPNs or location workarounds to bypass restrictions.

Real-money, legal, tax and RG questions

Are online casinos legal in the US?

Legal availability depends on state law, operator licensing and market type. Do not treat offshore, sweepstakes and state-regulated operators as the same.

Do roulette promotions always apply to roulette?

No. Roulette may contribute less than slots, and live dealer games may be excluded. Check wagering, contribution, max bet, expiry, KYC and withdrawal rules.

Are gambling winnings taxable?

Gambling winnings may be taxable in the United States. Keep records and verify current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional.

What should I check before any real-money roulette play?

Check legal availability, operator licensing, table rules, limits, bonus terms, KYC, withdrawal terms and responsible gambling tools before depositing.

When should I stop playing roulette?

Stop if losses, near-wins, systems, bonus terms or the urge to recover money make you feel pressure to continue.

Where can I get gambling support?

For confidential help in the United States, call or text 1-800-MY-RESET or use NCPG support resources.
