Massachusetts Gambling Help,Limits and Self-Exclusion
Choose the next safe action, see which control covers which product, and understand what Massachusetts voluntary self-exclusion does before you enroll.
MASSACHUSETTS HELP NOW
What should I do if gambling feels hard to control in Massachusetts?
If gambling feels hard to control, pause access to money and betting before trying to win it back. In Massachusetts, call 800-327-5050, text GAMB to that number, or use the Massachusetts helpline website for free, confidential support and referrals. Choose lighter product controls only when they are enough; choose each needed casino, sports-wagering or iLottery self-exclusion list for a stronger block. A loved one cannot enroll another adult. Call or text 988 for emotional crisis, and 911 for immediate physical danger or medical emergency.
START HERE
Choose the next action, not a diagnosis
Choose the lane that matches the most urgent need now. If more than one applies, use the danger or crisis lane first, then return for gambling-specific support or a control.
-
Immediate physical danger or medical emergency
- Do now
- Call 911.
- What it does
- Routes an immediate physical danger or medical emergency to emergency services.
- What it does not do
- This page, the gambling helplines and VSE are not emergency dispatch.
-
Suicidal thoughts or emotional distress
- Do now
- Call 988, text 988 or use 988 chat (opens in a new tab). You do not need to be suicidal.
- What it does
- Connects a person in emotional crisis with free, confidential crisis support.
- What it does not do
- 988 is not gambling treatment, a VSE agent or an absolute-anonymity promise; imminent-risk and legal exceptions may apply.
-
Gambling is causing harm or feels hard to control
- Do now
- Call 800-327-5050, text GAMB to 800-327-5050 or use the Massachusetts help site and chat (opens in a new tab).
- What it does
- Provides 24/7 gambling-specific support, education and referrals. No diagnosis is required.
- What it does not do
- The helpline does not operate treatment, enroll VSE, decide a complaint, close an account or provide crisis dispatch.
-
I am worried about someone else
- Do now
- Use the Massachusetts Helpline actions in the lane above; specialists also support loved ones. Then follow the four-step plan below.
- What it does
- Gives you a private place to plan a caring conversation, boundaries and referral options.
- What it does not do
- You cannot enroll another adult in VSE or impersonate them to change an account.
-
I want a stronger block across licensed Massachusetts products
- Do now
- Call 1-800-GAM-1234 (1-800-426-1234) or use PlayWell (opens in a new tab) to start VSE education/enrollment. Select every separate casino, sports and/or iLottery list you need.
- What it does
- Starts the official Massachusetts process for one or more licensed-product exclusion lists.
- What it does not do
- It is not automatic nationwide coverage, retail-Lottery exclusion, treatment, debt cancellation or loss recovery.
-
I want a smaller limit or temporary break
- Do now
- Use the exact product-control matrix below before the next deposit or wager. Choose the row for the exact casino, licensed sportsbook or Mass Lottery Online channel.
- What it does
- Shows narrower tracking, limit, suspension and cool-off options that can be used immediately or before VSE.
- What it does not do
- A tracker, limit or one-online-platform timeout is not statewide VSE and is not enough when the stop signals below are present.
-
I am outside Massachusetts or want national support
- What it does
- Provides national 24/7 support, information and referral across the United States and territories, including for loved ones.
- What it does not do
- NCPG is not an emergency line, Massachusetts regulator, VSE enrollment agent or treatment provider.
STOP SIGNALS
When a limit is no longer the first move
These are prompts to seek support, not a diagnosis or score. If any one applies, pause gambling and use the Massachusetts support lane above before relying on another limit or wager.
- Defensive: becoming defensive when someone asks about gambling.
- Failed cutbacks: repeatedly trying and failing to cut down or stop.
- Preoccupation: thinking about gambling much of the time.
- Gambling under distress: gambling while stressed, anxious or depressed.
- Chasing: returning to try to win back losses.
- Hiding: lying about or concealing the extent of gambling.
- Life impact: losing an important relationship, job or opportunity because of gambling.
- Borrowing: needing to borrow money because of gambling.
Next action: stop deposits and wagers for now; use the call, text or chat action in the Massachusetts support lane. Use 988 or 911 first when the crisis or danger lane applies.
CONTROL COVERAGE
Which control covers which Massachusetts product?
Use the exact row for the product and channel. A narrower tool can be useful, but it does not inherit another row’s coverage.
| Product and control | Where it applies | What happens | Change / duration | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casino slots — PlayMyWay budget tracking Open PlayMyWay details (opens in a new tab) |
Slot/electronic gaming at Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor. | Set a daily, weekly or monthly budget; receive notices at 75%, 100%, 125% and later intervals. | Enroll, adjust or unenroll at a slot machine or PlayMyWay kiosk with the rewards card. | It tracks and notifies; it does not hard-stop play, cover table games, block accounts or replace VSE. |
| Licensed sportsbook account — deposit and wager limits | The person’s Category 3 Massachusetts sportsbook account. | Daily, weekly and monthly deposit and wager limits cap the selected account activity. | A more restrictive change is immediate. A less restrictive change waits until the prior limit period expires, then the next business day and reaffirmation. | It is account-level, not casino, Lottery, other-operator or statewide exclusion; interfaces may label controls differently. |
| One licensed sportsbook online platform/account — temporary prohibition | The person’s Sports Wagering Account and that operator’s online Sports Wagering Platform. | Blocks deposits into that account and wagers on that platform; applicable sports-wagering marketing for the platform is suppressed during the selected period. | Takes effect through the operator. Current 205 CMR 254 lets the person select and renew a period; it does not publish one statewide duration menu. | The regulation does not establish a retail-facility wagering block. This one-platform/account break is not the statewide Sports Wagering VSE list. |
| Mass Lottery Online — personal deposit and play limits Open official online controls (opens in a new tab) |
The official 21+ Mass Lottery Online account, not retail Lottery buying. | Personal deposit/play limits and 30-minute session reminders help cap or interrupt online activity. | A stricter limit is immediate; an increase waits 48 hours. | These online-account mechanics do not set retail Lottery rules or cover casinos/sportsbooks. |
| Mass Lottery Online — Cool-Off period Open the Cool-Off route (opens in a new tab) Read current Cool-Off terms (PDF opens in a new tab) |
Official Mass Lottery Online deposits, purchases/play, promotions and direct marketing. | The selected online actions are blocked immediately; stated withdrawals, account changes and retail features remain available. | Choose 24 hours; three, seven or 15 days; or one, three or six months. It cannot be shortened, cancelled or changed. | It does not block retail Lottery purchases, casino gaming or licensed sports betting. |
| Casino gaming, licensed sports betting and/or Mass Lottery Online — voluntary self-exclusion Open MGC VSE (opens in a new tab) Read current iLottery VSE terms (PDF opens in a new tab) |
One or more separately selected Massachusetts casino, sports-wagering and iLottery lists. | Covered venue/platform access, accounts/play, rewards/promotions and marketing are restricted under the applicable list. | Choose one, three or five years, or lifetime when eligible. The term cannot be reduced and does not auto-expire. | Choose every needed list. Massachusetts-only authority, operator discretion and retail-Lottery boundaries remain. |
Current program name: PlayWell (which replaced GameSense on March 27, 2026). The former name is a legacy search term, not the visible name of today’s MGC program.
VOLUNTARY SELF-EXCLUSION
Before, during and after voluntary self-exclusion
VSE is voluntary and consequential. Read all seven rows before selecting a list or duration; use the official agent process for the actual form.
-
Choose casino gaming, sports wagering, iLottery or a combination
Casino Gaming VSE, Sports Wagering VSE and iLottery VSE are separate choices. Select one or more; one selection does not silently add the other two. iLottery VSE does not block retail Lottery buying or claims.
-
Enroll only for yourself through PlayWell or an MGC designated agent
Only the consenting person can enroll. Start with the MGC VSE route (opens in a new tab), call 1-800-GAM-1234 (1-800-426-1234), use PlayWell chat (opens in a new tab), visit a PlayWell Hub during casino operating hours, or contact MGC at 617-533-9737 / vse@massgaming.gov. A loved one cannot complete this step for another adult.
-
Show government-issued photo ID, sign the agreement and be photographed
The official process requires government ID with photo/signature, the agreement and a photo. Remote enrollment also requires email, video and a compatible device. The official agent provides the form. Do not send this website those fields or ask it to prefill, store or transmit them.
-
Choose one, three or five years; after at least six months, lifetime is available
The selected term cannot be reduced; extension is possible. Lifetime eligibility requires at least six months previously on a VSE list. Choose a term only after reviewing the official consequences; this guide does not select a term for you.
-
Expect access, account, rewards and marketing restrictions
Applicable gaming areas, retail sportsbook areas, Massachusetts-licensed sports platforms or Mass Lottery Online features are blocked according to the selected list. Rewards, promotions and direct marketing can be suspended. A detected breach can bring escort, account/action blocks and forfeiture consequences; losses are not reclaimed.
-
Check privacy, operator-extension and retail-Lottery boundaries
MGC states that ordinary family, employer and clinician requests do not receive list information, but Public Records Law, court-order and Secretary-of-the-Commonwealth exceptions remain. An operator may extend exclusion to affiliates or other jurisdictions at its discretion; verify that scope. Massachusetts VSE does not promise nationwide coverage, and iLottery VSE leaves retail Lottery purchasing/claims outside the online block.
-
Request and complete reinstatement after the selected term
The selected period does not auto-expire. After a non-lifetime term, arrange the required petition/reinstatement session through the GAM Line, a PlayWell Hub or MGC and keep the confirmation receipt. Current iLottery lifetime exclusion is not removable. Do not expect an instant or entirely online reinstatement.
HELPING SOMEONE
If you are helping someone else
You can seek support for yourself and invite action. You cannot diagnose, coerce, impersonate or enroll another adult.

Start with care and one observation
Choose a calm time. Describe one observed impact and ask an open question; avoid labels, threats and an argument about total losses.

Protect only what you lawfully control
Pause your own transfers, shared spending authority or access you are authorized to change. Do not enter the person’s account, hide identity, intercept messages or act as them.

Use support together—or by yourself
The Massachusetts Helpline helps loved ones even when the person gambling is not ready. Open the official Massachusetts help route (opens in a new tab) or use the call or text actions above.

Escalate danger, not disagreement
Use 988 for suicidal thoughts or emotional crisis and 911 for immediate physical danger or medical emergency. Use the Massachusetts complaints or scams guide for a dispute, coercive payment demand or account-security incident.
PROOF LIMITS
Four boundaries that prevent a false promise
Confidential does not mean zero data
Helpline services are described as free and confidential. Websites may still use cookies, analytics and information a visitor provides; safety or legal disclosure exceptions can apply. Avoid sensitive detail in generic links.
A control is not treatment or a guarantee
Tracking, limits, Cool-Off and VSE can interrupt covered activity. None diagnoses, treats, recovers losses or guarantees that every gambling route is inaccessible.
Scope follows the selected product
One sportsbook timeout is not statewide sports VSE; one VSE choice is not all three lists; iLottery VSE is not retail-Lottery exclusion; Massachusetts authority is not automatic nationwide coverage.
Support is voluntary; emergencies are separate
A loved one may seek guidance but cannot enroll another adult. Gambling helplines are not emergency dispatch. Use 988 for emotional crisis and 911 for immediate danger or medical emergency.
