Current answer

What gambling is legal in Massachusetts right now?

Legal gambling available in Massachusetts spans separate lanes: three MGC-licensed commercial gaming facilities, First Light tribal gaming, licensed retail and mobile sports wagering, retail Lottery, Mass Lottery Online, pari-mutuel horse wagering, fantasy contests and qualifying charitable games. Mass Lottery Online launched July 27, 2026 for verified players age 21 or older who are physically in Massachusetts. The state has no regulated real-money online-casino or online-poker market, and access to a sweepstakes or prediction platform does not make it state-approved. This is general information, not personal legal or tax advice.

Read each row as its own legal and regulatory lane. “Available” never means every brand, format or promotion is approved.

Freshness check: Any Massachusetts guide that still calls iLottery “prelaunch” is stale on operational status.

How to verify a Massachusetts gambling route

Age, taxes, complaints and help

The next action depends on the product and the problem. Use the correct lane below.

Premium Massachusetts age and access verification desk

How old do you have to be to gamble in Massachusetts?

21+: MGC commercial casino gaming, the First Light gaming floor, sports wagering, fantasy contests and Mass Lottery Online.

18+: retail Massachusetts Lottery and horse wagering. Under-18s are also barred from licensed beano and bazaar gaming areas. The reviewed provisions do not establish one blanket participant age for every raffle.

Action: Check the full Massachusetts gambling age guide.

Premium Massachusetts gambling tax and recordkeeping desk

How are gambling winnings and losses handled for Massachusetts taxes?

Federal gambling winnings are taxable. Massachusetts allows a limited loss deduction only for qualifying losses from Chapter 23N sportsbooks, Chapter 23K gaming establishments, and licensed racing or simulcast activity, capped at qualifying gains. Massachusetts Lottery and out-of-state losses do not qualify under that provision.

Keep Form W-2G when issued and maintain an accurate diary or similar record of winnings and losses, supported by receipts, tickets, statements or other records. This is general information, not individual tax advice.

Action: Use the Massachusetts gambling taxes guide.

Premium Massachusetts complaint evidence and scam-report routing desk

Where should a Massachusetts gambling complaint or scam report go?

Account, wager or venue dispute: use the product-specific complaint route. The MGC Fair Deal form asks for the gaming establishment, incident date/time, machine or table number when applicable, and an incident summary.

Suspected illegal or unlicensed gambling: use the AGO gaming-tip route.

For scam-response steps, use the Massachusetts gambling scams guide; this hub does not reproduce the detailed incident workflow.

Action: Open Massachusetts complaints or Massachusetts gambling scams.

Premium Massachusetts gambling support and account-control routes

Where can I get gambling help or self-exclusion support in Massachusetts?

Support is separate from a complaint. For free, confidential Massachusetts help, call 800-327-5050 or text GAMB to 800-327-5050. PlayBreak/VSE can cover MGC casino gaming, Massachusetts sports wagering and Mass Lottery Online; the reviewed sources do not establish automatic coverage of First Light, fantasy, racing or retail Lottery.

National help is available by calling or texting 1-800-MY-RESET or using NCPG chat.

Important Massachusetts boundaries

Keep these systems separate before treating a route, brand or status as proof.

  1. Commercial and tribal gaming use different proof. Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino are MGC-regulated commercial facilities; First Light operates under a separate Mashpee Wampanoag tribal framework.
  2. Mass Lottery Online is not an online casino. The official online Lottery lane does not authorize real-money online slots, blackjack, roulette or poker.
  3. Fantasy regulation is not sportsbook licensing. Fantasy contests use an AGO consumer-rule lane with an MGC-published operator roster; sports wagering uses Chapter 23N licensing.
  4. Availability is not Massachusetts approval. A website, app listing, consumer brand, federal registration or accepted Massachusetts address does not replace the relevant state/tribal proof.
  5. Sweepstakes and prediction products require narrow conclusions. Massachusetts has no approved sweepstakes-casino roster. A prediction platform’s availability or federal/CFTC status does not establish an MGC sportsbook license or Massachusetts approval, and this hub does not decide whether a specific contract is lawful. Use the law tracker for dated court history.
  6. This status map is not personal legal or tax advice. Product status, operator acceptance, complaint review and a general tax summary do not decide an individual case, recovery outcome or filing position.
