West Virginia Lottery:games, iPLAY and prize claims

Choose the right product and channel, verify the controlling win record, protect the deadline and use the correct retail or iPLAY claim route.

CURRENT ANSWER

How do West Virginia Lottery retail and iPLAY routes work?

West Virginia Lottery play is available to adults 18 or older through licensed retailers and the state-operated iPLAY website or app. Seven of nine current draw games are purchasable through iPLAY; Keno and Ca$h Pop are retail-only, while physical Scratch-Offs and digital iNSTANTS are separate products. Online deposits and purchases require physical presence in West Virginia. Verify every win using the original ticket or security-tested WVL system data and start the correct claim within the applicable official claim window; screenshots and account Transaction History are not evidence.

This source-led guide is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice, a regulator statement or a firsthand purchase or claim test.

Start with the record you actually own

Choose the correct West Virginia Lottery channel

Identify the purchase record before checking a result or prize amount. Retail tickets and iPLAY transactions do not use one interchangeable claim process.

Physical draw-game ticketAn authorized West Virginia Lottery retailer on its licensed premises.Sale is 18+. An adult gift-ticket exception does not permit a minor purchase or iPLAY account. The original ticket; sign it and store it securely. A playslip, photo, scan or result page is not a replacement.180 calendar days from the drawing.Use the retail prize-band matrix. A mailed ticket must be received by the deadline.
Physical Scratch-OffAn authorized retailer; use the official catalog and game number to confirm status.Sale is 18+; the same narrow adult gift-ticket rule applies. The original ticket plus the official game number/end record.180 calendar days from the announced official end of that game.Use the retail prize-band matrix and current claim-page/office record.
iPLAY draw purchaseThe state-operated iPLAY website or official WV Lottery app.18+, U.S. resident, verified individual account; physically inside West Virginia for every deposit and purchase. WV residency is not required.Only WVL system data that passes all security tests controls. Transaction History is convenience-only and not an official record; preserve the emailed purchase receipt and report discrepancies, but do not treat that receipt as controlling evidence.180 calendar days from the drawing; if the 180th day is a Lottery closure day, Terms provide the next-business-day handling.Use the iPLAY prize-band matrix; exact $600 is a support-check stop.
Digital iNSTANTThe iPLAY account; it is not a physical Scratch-Off or private online-casino game. The same iPLAY age, account, U.S.-resident and in-state deposit/purchase controls.Only security-tested WVL system data controls the purchase/outcome. A screenshot, printout, photograph or Transaction History display is not evidence.Public reviewed sources do not establish a clear Digital iNSTANT claim clock; follow current account/Lottery instructions and contact Player Support promptly.Use the iPLAY prize-band matrix; do not import the physical Scratch-Off announced-end rule.

Channel reconciliation: one physical ticket or one WVL-system purchase determines the record, deadline and first claim route; user-visible Transaction History is not the official record, and the two matrices must never be combined.

The label “lottery app” is not enough

Four services that should not be confused

Premium secure iPLAY account and controlling system record

West Virginia Lottery iPLAY

The state-operated account can sell the seven eligible draw games and Digital iNSTANTS. It requires an individual verified account, U.S. residency and physical presence inside West Virginia for each deposit and purchase. Only WVL system data that passes all security tests controls; the user-visible Transaction History is convenience-only and is not an official record.

Premium authorized retailer and original ticket record

Authorized Lottery retailer

A licensed physical location sells retail tickets. The original ticket controls the claim. A retailer is not an iPLAY account, and a playslip does not replace the ticket.

Premium custody boundary for a private lottery ticket service

Private ticket-ordering or courier service

A private service can present state tickets or order handling in its own product. It is not the West Virginia Lottery, and this guide does not verify, rank, link to or recommend one. Read custody, fee and claim terms directly before acting.

Premium scanner and controlling record verification boundary

Scanner or results service

A scanner or result display may help identify a possible win, but it does not become the original ticket or security-tested WVL system data. Verify through the controlling Lottery record before discarding, mailing or claiming anything.

The official platform is identified by the state-operated account and official Lottery domain—not by an app icon, ad, store ranking or claim to show official numbers.

Choose channel first, amount second

Choose the right West Virginia Lottery prize route

Do not merge retail-ticket and iPLAY thresholds. Confirm the current claim page before mailing documents or traveling.

A possible win is not yet a claim

Protect the record and the deadline in five steps

Use this order before mailing a ticket, traveling to an office or relying on a display.

  1. Action: Identify the purchase channel before using an amount band.

Keep: Physical ticket or emailed iPLAY purchase receipt, game and purchase/draw date.

Stop when: The only evidence is a logo, app icon, courier receipt, scanner result or generic result page.

Controlling record: Current Lottery catalog + Terms/WVL system-data rules.

  2. Action: Preserve the controlling record.

Keep: For retail, sign and secure the original ticket. For iPLAY, preserve the emailed purchase receipt; only WVL system data passing all security tests controls.

Stop when: The original ticket is lost/damaged/disputed or the iPLAY display conflicts with WVL data. Report the discrepancy; the emailed receipt, Transaction History, screenshot, printout or photograph is not controlling evidence.

Controlling record: Claim page + Rule 179-01 + Terms sections Transaction History/Game Disputes.

  3. Action: Verify game status and result with the official Lottery record.

Keep: Exact game, draw date/time or instant game number/end notice and the official validation.

Stop when: Virginia rather than West Virginia, an old game rule, third-party number or stale schedule is the only match.

Controlling record: Current draw/Scratch-Off/iNSTANT catalog and system validation.

  4. Action: Calculate the controlling official claim clock.

Keep: Draw date or physical Scratch-Off announced game-end date; for mail, the required arrival date.

Stop when: Copy says one year, no physical game-end record exists, a Digital iNSTANT is involved or delivery/travel could fail. For Digital iNSTANT, follow the current account/Lottery instruction and contact Player Support promptly.

    Controlling record: §29-22-16 + Rule 179-01 §§6.1(f)/7.4 for draw/physical instant; no proved Digital-iNSTANT clock.

  5. Action: Apply channel, amount, documents and destination.

Keep: Current claim form, photo ID/SS proof where required, address/office confirmation and any account instruction.

Stop when: Exact iPLAY $600, a changed office/threshold, pool/trust/minor issue, offset, anonymity or personal tax question remains unresolved.

Controlling record: Current Claim page + Terms; Player Support for exact $600; qualified help for personal law/tax facts.

A legitimate Lottery claim may require tax forms and identity documents, but do not pay an advance fee or send money merely to unlock a prize. Verify any request through the official claim or Player Support route.

Keep separate systems separate

Four boundaries that prevent a wrong conclusion

Premium separation of four West Virginia gambling product systems

One regulator does not make one product

Traditional draw games, physical Scratch-Offs and iPLAY Digital iNSTANTS belong here. Limited Video Lottery, private iGaming and sports wagering use separate statutes, ages, records and owners even though the West Virginia Lottery regulates them.

Premium geolocation and account identity boundary

Physical presence is not West Virginia residency

An eligible U.S. resident may register without being a West Virginia resident, but each iPLAY deposit and purchase must occur while physically inside West Virginia. Account verification and location are separate checks.

Premium gift-ticket and guardian record boundary

An adult gift ticket is not minor participation

An adult may lawfully buy a retail ticket as a gift for a minor. If the minor is the lawful prize recipient, §29-22-15 lets the Director handle a prize under $5,000 by delivering a check or draft payable to the minor to an adult family member or legal guardian. For $5,000 or more, the Director may deposit the prize in a bank to the credit of an adult family member or legal guardian acting as guardian for the minor; that named guardian must qualify under Chapter 44, Article 10. This does not permit a minor purchase, iPLAY account or use of another person's account.

Premium tax withholding offset and disclosure route boundary

Withholding, offsets and disclosure are not the final outcome

A current withholding amount is not final tax liability. A qualifying support-debt offset or lawful disclosure can also affect a claim. This guide does not calculate a personal return, offset or net payout.
